Six Flags Discovery Kingdom

The big excitement in June at Six Flags Discovery Kingdom will be the debut of the new Odin’s Temple of the Tiger. The popular tiger show is moving to a larger, more comfortable venue. In addition to the show, you can watch the tigers in an observation area at the new location. Odin’s Temple of the Tiger is expected to open around the 10th of June. Following a period of adjustment for the tigers, shows will begin.

Also big in June at Six Flags Discovery Kingdom is the kickoff of the Starburst Summer Concert Series. The first act, appearing on Wednesday June 24th, will be the Australian pop stars The Veronicas. The show is free with park admission (including season pass holders). Admission to the concert, however, requires a free wrist band. The wrist bands will be distributed at the park on the date of the concert on a first-come, first-served basis.

Dragon Train roller coaster

All aboard for Sonoma TrainTown!

This charming amusement park near downtown Sonoma off of Highway 12 features a Wisdom kiddie coaster credit called “Dragon Train.” And you can’t miss the miniature train ride through tunnels, over bridges and trestles, and around the heavily-wooded park. Be sure to bring a camera with you on the train as there is a large mirror so you can take a picture of yourself on the open-car train. Bring quarters to feed the animals at the petting zoo / miniature town stop on the train ride. There are goats, sheep, bunnies, and more to feed. Additional rides at the park are a merry-go-round, Ferris wheel, scrambler, swings, and an airplane ride for kids only. Kids can also play in the train structure above the park entrance. Train rides are $4.75 each. Roller coaster rides are two $1.25 tickets each or buy a book of ten tickets for $10.00. From June to Labor Day, the park is open every day from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Between September and May, the park is open Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and holidays. The “Dragon Train” roller coaster operates only on the weekends. We visited on a recent Saturday morning in May and the park was not too crowded with all rides in operation.

Six Flags Discovery Kingdom

Roar’s Tenth!

Roar

It does not seem like ten years have passed since we welcomed Roar to the Northern California coaster lineup. But it’s true and Six Flags Discovery Kingdom is celebrating the coaster’s birthday in a special way. Here’s the park’s press release:

SIX FLAGS DISCOVERY KINGDOM TO CELEBRATE ROAR’S 10TH ANNIVERSARY

Moms can ride 10 times in a row with their 10-year-olds on May 9

(Vallejo, CA) – May 1, 2009 – Six Flags Discovery Kingdom will celebrate the 10th anniversary of its wooden roller coaster, Roar, on Saturday, May 9. The 95-foot tall coaster has delighted over 6.8 million riders and cycled approximately 283,333 times since its opening in May 1999.

“Roar is a throwback to some of the great wooden coasters of our time, but is modern in every sense,” said Eric Gilbert, park president. “It still ranks among the top roller coasters in Northern California due to the fact that riders experience the feeling of being airborne over and over during the course of its 12 breathtaking drops.”

Because the anniversary period falls in the same month as Mother’s Day, the park will mark both occasions by inviting moms and their 10-year-old kids to ride Roar 10 times in a row the day before Mother’s Day between 12 noon and 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 9. Mothers and their kids that ride will receive a commemorative Mother’s Day photo of them on the ride and a sticker to wear that reads, “I rode Roar 10 times in a row!”

Manufactured by Great Coasters International, Inc., Roar which has a top speed of 50 mph, taking riders along a 3,467 spiraling track that features six reversals, 22 crossovers, 17 turns, 12 drops – all this with a G-force of 3.5.

In recognition of the milestone, Mayor Osby Davis and the Vallejo City Council are proclaiming May 9 as Roar’s 10th Anniversary Day, on behalf of the City of Vallejo.

Individuals interested in participating on behalf of Roar’s 10th Anniversary will be able to sign up to ride as they enter the park between the hours of 10 to 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 9. The exclusive ride time will take place on one of two Roar trains during the event hour.

Six Flags Discovery Kingdom is open Fridays and weekends through May 22, after which the park will open daily for the summer through August 23. Operating hours vary. Season Passes are still available for the value price of $49.99 plus city fee through May 25, 2009. Season Passes can be purchased in-park, online or through SaveMart/Lucky stores.

Darren R. Besoyan

The ACE NorCal Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk Behind-the-Scenes Tour II was a huge success. Eighty-one members and guests attended. Many were local, some came up from SoCal, still others came from as far away Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Argentina! Watch for the full story in the next issue of ACE News.

Bill Theobald, NorCal ACE member from Berkeley has posted his pictures from the event. To see them, please visit: Bill Theobald’s SCBB Tour Event photo album. Has anyone else posted their photos? Send the link our way, and we’ll gladly share it with ACE NorCal, OK?

Many who attended the event wrote to say thanks and to tell us how much fun they had. Here’s what some of you had to say:

Ah! It is so nice to think back to our wonderful weekend at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk. Thanks for sharing my photos with ACE NorCal. Enjoy!

-Bill Theobald, Berkeley, CA

Thanks again for putting on a great event, Darren.

-Steven Wilson, ACE NorCal Regional Representative
San Jose, CA

Thank you once again for letting my niece and nephew come along with me. It was a great weekend for all of us. It was great to do something so fun on their last weekend before heading back home. This was the first time for both of them at the Boardwalk, so it was also obviously their first time on the Giant Dipper also. They loved it! They are now safe and sound back in Argentina. The mileage on the name tags was priceless. They really appreciated the extra effort. I gave Colleen and Tom their name tags when we got back and they thought it was hilarious. Looking forward to 2014.

-Derek Willhite, Santa Rosa, CA

Everyone here really had fun working with your event. We love our park, and always enjoy sharing it with an appreciative audience! Are you sure you want to wait until 2014 to do it again?

-Brigid Fuller, Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk

Thanks again so much for your hospitality and the great time in NorCal. I’ll keep my eyes open for another one of your events. Your group was so very helpful. Please pass along my thanks to everyone!

-John Sly, Coatesville, PA

As anyone knows who has talked with me about my love for amusement parks and attractions, the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk is my favorite amusement park in the world, and contains my favorite roller coaster, the Giant Dipper. So to say this event was, for me, a highlight of my life, is an understatement! I am very grateful for both this event and the one 5 years ago–thanks for helping me experience things I’d never normally be able to when I visit the Boardwalk.

Thank you and everyone involved for all the hard work that went into it, and, if the event is possible in 2014 I offer my help in organizing and executing the event!

Again, thank you all, I had a terrific time!

Sincerely,
Gerry Watt, Assistant Regional Representative, ACE NorCal
Sacramento, CA

Hey Darren,

Just wanted to say thanks to you and the folks at ACE and SCBB for putting together a great event over the weekend. The social and mini-golf tourney were great touches too. It was great to meet you, and I really look forward to the next event!

-Greg Sarkisian, Tillson, NY

Wow, thanks for all the great e-mails everyone! I really appreciate it. Producing the event was my esteem and great pleasure. Thanks much to the entire staff at the Santa Cruz Seaside Company, for without their cooperation & enthusiasm, this event would not have been possible.

Sincerely,

Darren R. Besoyan, ACE NorCal Assistant Regional Representative
Sacramento, CA
